How we measure the glossiness of our metallized papers
Our papers offer a range of functional benefits alongside technical performance that rivals several multilayer alternatives. But at the same time, a big part of the appeal of metallized paper is its glossy good looks, which are ideally suited to premium products. But did you know that in scientific terms, “gloss” means something very specific? Gloss measurement is a precise science and an important aspect of our quality control procedures.
Gloss is an optical property that indicates how well a surface reflects light. To ensure that glossiness is consistent from one roll of paper to the next, we use something called a glossmeter. The instrument projects a beam of light onto a surface and measures how much light is reflected back. This enables us to calculate a product’s glossiness in gloss units (GU). “High gloss” is over 70 GU, “semi-gloss” 10 to 70 and “low gloss” or “matte” below 10 GU.
