It's National Liqueur Day in the USA!
Liqueurs (not to be confused with liquors) are increasingly popular, and to celebrate National Liqueur Day in the USA, we’re exploring liqueur label trends and why the drinks are increasingly popular.
What is a liqueur?
Liqueurs are distilled, un-aged, (usually) sweet alcoholic drinks that are typically served after-dinner, or in cocktails. They are traditionally flavored with cream, spices, fruit, flowers or nuts. Almond-flavored Amaretto or Irish cream are liqueurs, whereas vodka or rum are considered to be liquor, for example.
Growing demand
As consumer demand for liqueur is growing, so has its market share within the alcohol industry. The last few years have seen many brand launches and new liqueurs available for sale. The trend is linked with consumers having more disposable income and greater appreciation for what were once ‘niche’ drinks. As a consequence, they are actively trying to extend their liqueur repertoire and try new drinks. Premium and high-quality liqueurs are especially in demand as consumers look for unique beverages.Liqueurs are usually sold in glass bottles, and most of the new drinks in the sector are no exception. Pressure-strength labels are a natural consideration for many brands in their pursuit of the perfect label for their liqueur, given the fantastic adhesion the labelling method offers.
Popular and premium
Liqueurs, whether mixed in a cocktail, served neat or with ice are something to sip and savor. Consumers purchasing liqueurs today are particularly interested in the brands available to them at the top end of the scale.
Cream of the crop?
Of all the liqueurs available, demand for creams is expected to grow quickest over the next few years. The trend is thought to come from the extensive choice of ‘standard’ and ‘bitter’ alcoholic beverages available, with consumers looking for sweeter, more unusual, luxurious alternatives.
Labelling liqueurs: standing out in the crowd
Undoubtedly, the growing demand for liqueurs has fueled market competition. As a result, today’s leading and niche brands are exploring how best to make an impact – especially at the coveted premium and superior end of the market.
As with any bottled drink, labelling choices are essential and remain one of the most important factors in persuading customers to make a purchase. Given liqueurs especially are richly colored, metallized labels and metallic shine plays perfectly with the drinks and has proven to be a very popular choice.
Creams typically come in darker bottles. This is because the residue on the inside of the bottle after pouring can look unappealing, and opaque glass covers this up. Metallic, glossy and premium-feel labels look particularly stunning against any smoky glass shades.
