Tackling counterfeiting with packaging design

Tackling counterfeiting with packaging design

Counterfeiting remains a major challenge at a global level. According to a recent report produced by Europol and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), counterfeit goods could represent close to 6% of imports to the EU, or €119 billion in value. What’s more, counterfeiters appear to be using imitation brand packaging in order to give fake goods, which mainly include pharmaceuticals, food and beverages and clothing, a veneer of authenticity.

However, there are certain technical solutions that can make branded packaging extremely difficult and labour-intensive to copy. Options can include smart packaging involving blockchain technology that attribute unique ID numbers to products and thus certifying ownership and provenance, RFID tags and ink-based security features. Some solutions integrate all of the above.

Holography is a cost-effective, efficient anti-counterfeiting solution. Not only is it very difficult for fraudsters to reproduce, it makes packaging instantly recognisable for all parties concerned, helping boost consumer/brand trust.
