What do sustainable packaging certifications and labels mean?
Sustainability certificates can be useful for several reasons: while they can be time-consuming and expensive to obtain, they not only help businesses measure their performance, they also help customers recognise brands’ sustainability commitments.
Advantages of eco-friendly certifications and labels
- Taking the steps required to meet certification standards helps businesses reduce their carbon emissions, eliminate waste to the best of their abilities and support sustainable practices.
- Consumers are increasingly likely to buy from brands with demonstrated sustainability performance, and to spend more money with them. Highlighting your certifications on communication materials helps uphold your brand values and attract eco-minded consumers.
- Certifications improve your brand experience by indicating to customers exactly what they can and can’t recycle and how.
Some major sustainable packaging certifications and labels
Established in 1992, EU Ecolabel is the official European Union voluntary label that certifies products as having an independently-verified low environmental impact. To date, it is the only official ecolabel that can be used in every country of the EU and in Switzerland.
While not strictly speaking an ecolabel or certification, ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management programmes and aims to help companies set up an EMS, or Environmental Management System.
Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits to local communities. In addition to FSC® certification, we also offer Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certification, which provides a similar guarantee of sustainable sourcing. While FSC and PEFC share the goal of promoting responsible forestry, they operate as distinct frameworks, allowing us to meet diverse certification needs by providing both options.
The ECOLOGO® Certification Programme certifies products and services for reduced environmental impact, while the French label EcoVadis rates businesses’ sustainability and CSR performance according to international sustainability standards.
While the recyclability of a product is signified by the universal Mobius Loop, organisations can take the extra step of having their recyclability clearly communicated to consumers through schemes such as the On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) in the UK, or How2Recycle label in the US.
