What is Zero Waste?
#ZeroWaste is more than just a popular instagram hashtag. For many, it’s a commitment to a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of living. But what does Zero Waste actually mean?
Zero Waste is an approach to sustainability that aims to send as little as possible to landfill. Based on the mantra “Reduce, reuse, recycle and compost”, Zero Waste can be achieved, according to the Zero Waste International Alliance, when 90% of waste is diverted from landfills or incinerators.
Rather than a linear economy in which resources are extracted and the results disposed of, zero waste aims to minimize materials at every stage of production, sale and use. From a manufacturing point of view, this means developing technologies and systems that support the elimination of waste through reuse and recycling to the fullest extent possible.
