Why it's important to source sustainable paper
Paper is widely considered to be one of the most sustainable materials available - if not the only truly sustainable base material for packaging products. This is because it is based on wood, a renewable, recyclable and compostable natural resource, and is one of the most recycled commodities across the world. And while research into biodegradable and recyclable plastics continues to advance, it has a lot of ground to make up: less than 10% of all the plastic ever produced has been recycled.
As well as being one of the most easy materials to recycle, paper is highly versatile, making it convenient to work with for printers, converters and designers. What’s more, technologies such as metallized vacuum vaporisation can improve the technical performance of paper by improving its barrier properties, durability and design versatility.
However, when working with virgin paper, or paper that has not been recycled, it’s essential to ensure it’s sustainably sourced. The paper industry has a significant impact on forests, natural environments and human and animal habitats across the world. In order to ensure that the paper they are working with has a positive impact, companies can opt for sources that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC certification currently guarantees the highest standards for sustainable tree fibre sourcing, ensuring that paper products originate from sustainably managed forests that meet high environmental standards.
