This year, Valentine’s Day is all about the classics

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

While some romantics may go for originality on Valentine’s Day, many opt  for the classics, i.e chocolates (44% of US shoppers will gift candy this year). And there’s a reason for that - while chocolate’s primary function is to be delicious, those cravings actually support an essential biological function. Cocoa contains Vitamin D2, which is mainly found in natural sunlight and helps people maintain healthy bones and teeth while improving mood and alleviating depression.

Unsurprisingly, reds are big when it comes to Valentine’s packaging for confectionery boxes and individually-wrapped candies. This year, you can also expect to see a lot of hot pink and magenta (as a reminder, Pantone’s Colour of the Year is “brave and fearless” Viva Magenta). But in order for chocolates to taste as good as they look, packaging shouldn’t just be pretty: it needs to preserve its contents’ flavour, taste and looks, while protecting consumers’ health and maintaining visual appeal.
